If you wanted a cool looking VRoid model but lacked the design skills, or let’s be real here, the time or patience to create one for yourself on the VRoid app, what do you do?
It’s simple, you find yourself a skilled artist who’s taking VRoid commissions. Since the VRoid app is not that difficult to get the hang of, there are many artists taking VRoid commissions online. Your job is to find someone who’s competent enough with a spark of creativity to create the best VRoid Model possible.
My job is to make that job not your job. So I’ve gone around the internet to find the best artists taking VRoid commissions. It’s a short list, but there’s someone here for you.
What do you need to commission a VRoid art?
💡 Your idea
Whatever VRoid model creator you choose will need a concept idea to work with. Usually, since the VRoid Model will be a virtual avatar of your person, that idea should come from you. You could use your selfie, a sketch, an anime character you like, or any cartoon character for that matter.
Alternatively, you can ask the VRoid creator to draw from their inspiration. However, I highly recommend the former option compared to this.
🎯 Your specifications
Idea in hand the next thing a VRoid artist will need is your custom specifications. How exactly do you want the Model to look in terms of the clothing they wear, the color palette, accessories they’ll have, the body physique and so forth? Some creators even allow you to specify granular details like eye color, hair color, and hair length, so keep those details handy if they matter to you.
What will you get from a VRoid Commission?
Most VRoid artists deliver a VRM file which is what you’ll upload to your favorite VTuber application. Note that VRoids, much like graphic art, differ in their levels of customization.
📍 You can have a VRoid rigged to track and replicate eye movements, facial expressions, gestures and more. Some artists might only configure, say, hand movements in the final VRM file, so make sure to clarify.
📍 If you plan on using your VRoid Model in VRChat, then you need to convert the VRM file into a VRChat version first. Most artists will only supply you with the VRM file, so again make sure to ask for this if it matters to you.
📍 The same thing goes if you plan on using your VRoid Model in the MMD app. For that, you’ll need to convert the VRM files into am MMD format. So ask for that as well.
Top VRoid commission services
Himepie on Fiverr
Creating a VRoid model can be complex for some, but Himpie makes it look like a piece of cake. With over seven years of experience creating VRoid models and other 3D/2D rigged artwork, it’s easy to see why this is the case.
This is your go-to guy for everyday and other more complex types of VRoid models. The kind that’s properly rigged up to track and implement a wide range of gestures and expressions. You need those if you’re planning on using your VRoid Model for anything serious, and by anything serious I mean all forms of VTubing, VRchatting and VRModelling.
At $150 apiece, it’s also very fairly priced, although that amount goes up if you need more intricate styling. Intricate styling and customization is a thing many VRoid artists miss, especially considering that most of the focus is on getting sublimely rigged VRoids. Himepie, however, doles out the same level of excellence he put out with rigging and concept creation in his styling and attention to detail.
Really, VRoids from this guy as so detailed it’s hard to believe they’re from a $250 package. While other VRoid creators stick to just the VRoid app, this guy custom details his VRoids in both blender and the Unity app.
Howard on Upwork
Like Himpie, this freelance VRoid creator is a seasoned professional. He’s well-grounded in the workings of character design and creation, rigging and even lighting for both 2D and 3D models. Those are the skills you’d want anyone handling your VRoid commission to have.
Added to that already stellar skillset is experience with body movement and hair physics, the stuff 3D model designers call ‘dynamic bone.’ If you’re looking to get a super realistic VRoid character, then this matters – it certainly matters if you want to look the coolest in the VRChat lounge room.
All that added coolness, however, comes at a price. This VRoid creator rates start at $200 for the basic package, and that won’t get you all the niceties that define the extra cool look. For that, you’ll need to purchase the $700 VRoid creation package, which, when compared to Himepie’s prices, is, without saying, expensive.
Hypu on Fiverr
Third on this list is Hypu an actual VTuber from Malaysia, so this is someone who’s very well familiar with what works in the VRoid world. Hypu’s designs are not the most exquisite out there, they certainly lack the detailing and touch of sophistication of Himepie’s designs, but what they do have is character.
As I said, this is an active VTuber and what that means is he’s very conversant with the going trends in VRoid design and character creation. VRoids created by this artist will always hit the mark for relevance and design fit. He’s the person you’ll want to hire if you’re not exactly sure what you need in a VRoid character.
He’s also the person to hire if you’re on a budget. At $70 apiece for his full design package, this is the cheapest VRoid commission on this review of the best VRoid commissions online. And while it’s easy to think that the drop in price comes at the cost of a drop in quality, VRoid commissions from this artist still look good and detailed enough to turn eyes on any VR platform.
