How to hire a WordPress developer on Fiverr

Fiverr is home to an increasingly diverse pool of freelancers, but if there’s one freelancer category with an over-representation on the platform, it is the Fiverr WordPress developers. There’s a literal horde of them, and that really spreads out your options. Whether you’re shopping for a full-stack WordPress developer to launch a website from the ground up or a developer for a session of troubleshooting, Fiverr has a WordPress developer for you.

In this guide, I outline what you need to select the best fit for your needs and then round it up with my selection of what I believe to be the top talent when it comes to WordPress development on Fiverr.

The qualities you should be on the lookout for

Knowledge of PHP, JavaScript, MySQL, WordPress, and SEO

Ideally, the qualities you should look for in a WordPress developer on Fiverr depends on your needs. If you’re looking to integrate an eCommerce portal onto an already established site, for instance, it makes sense to find someone who’s good with the backend stuff – fluent in PHP, JavaScript – and familiar with plugin functionalities. In any case, I’ll provide a general quality checklist that should be enough to define a competent WordPress developer. If a developer ticks all the checkboxes, then they should be able to adapt to your peculiar case scenario.

An eye for design

Excellent web design is a critical component of any website. Sometimes it’s all you need to stand out from your business’s competition. Other times, it’s the one factor that transforms leads into actual sales.

How do you gauge this in a Fiverr WordPress developer?

It’s simple, ask for both their design portfolio and websites where they’d successfully implemented those designs. Good designs look easy on the eye, so it’s not rocket science spotting good from bad, but as a general guide, you’ll want a WordPress developer with;

  • Experience and expertise in minimalism
  • An understanding of colors and color palettes
  • An understanding of web typography

In-depth knowledge of JavaScript

If you’ve owned a website before, you’ve probably heard the phrase ‘JavaScript is the language of the web.’ For the uninitiated, JavaScript is a programming language that underlines myriad functionalities of modern-day websites. Thorough understanding of JavaScript and JavaScript frameworks is an absolute must for any WordPress developer you plan on hiring on Fiverr.

How do you gauge this in a Fiverr WordPress developer?

Portfolios are the way to go here. Ask for example websites they’ve built before using plain JavaScript or JavaScript frameworks like React. If you don’t mind getting down and dirty with the technical stuff, you can ask for their Git-Hub repo – you’re looking for a developer who’s contributed to or ran several JavaScript projects.

PHP

Think of PHP as the scaffolding that holds up all the good design and JavaScript bits that make up the typical WordPress site. As was the case with JavaScript, any WordPress Developer you plan to hire on Fiverr must thoroughly understand this programming language.

How do you gauge this in a Fiverr WordPress developer?

Again, portfolios and significant activity with PHP projects on GitHub are the definitive litmus tests. Demonstratable knowledge of PHP frameworks like Laravel is also a good marker. Ask if they can show you evidence that they’ve worked with these tools before.

MySQL

MySQL is a database structure that allows you to organize data on your website. If you’re looking to float a robust website that supports things like e-commerce, customer accounts and user sessions, your WordPress developer must be conversant with the workings of this database architecture.

How do you gauge this in a Fiverr WordPress developer?

Portfolio, portfolio, portfolio. I know you’re probably tired of hearing portfolio, but that’s your best bet, except you want to get technical.

Conversant with the technical bits of search engine optimization

If you’re looking to launch a WordPress website or already own one, I’m assuming you want to show up in search results when someone types your business or something related to it into Google’s search bar. Search engine optimization is the key to making this happen. While there are many components of a typical SEO campaign, getting the technical bits right is important because they serve as a foundation for everything else.

How do you test this?

Ask the developer to send you the URL of a site they built that’s optimized for search engines. Load that URL, right-click on your browser, select inspect and then find the lighthouse tool. Lighthouse allows you to test a web page using different metrics, including its SEO performance. Check the SEO box and click generate report. If the URL scores numbers in the green, then that developer most likely knows a thing or two about technical SEO.

There are many other skills that fit into the WordPress developer playbook – expertise in HTML and CSS, for instance – but if a WordPress developer on Fiverr has all I’ve listed here, then it’s safe to assume they can find their way around the others.

I intentionally omitted things like experience with WordPress plugins and the many page builders available on WordPress because, as far as I know, these are cookie-cutter skills. If any WordPress developer fronts these as their main shtick, I’d be hesitant about hiring them.

Searching for a WordPress expert on Fiverr

Now you have an idea of what you should look out for in a WordPress developer on Fiverr, but how do you go about starting your search?

Create an account

If you don’t already have one, head on to fiverr.com/sign to create a Fiverr account. You’ll need it to hire freelancers on the platform

Use the search bar (labelled ‘Find Services’) to search for a Fiverr WordPress developer based on your needs

Fiverr’s search algorithm does a really nice job of returning the most relevant results when you search for any freelance service. So if you’re looking for a WordPress freelancer to, say, fix an SSL issue with your site, all you need do is type in ‘SSL WordPress developer,’ or something related to that.

Leverage filters

Use filters to finetune your search and to hone in on the perfect match

Fiverr filters are a good way to finetune search results further to fit your needs. With filters, you can specify a location, toggle freelancer language, sort for freelancers who can deliver in a day and so forth.

Selecting a freelancer

Before you get on with assessing the qualities I talked about earlier, you’ll want to make a shortlist of potential hires – it is from this list you’ll make a final decision based on the responses you get.

As I said, Fiverr runs an intelligent search algorithm. When you search for a WordPress developer on the platform, the WordPress development gigs you get are usually those from top-performing freelancers. After applying filters based on my needs, I look out for three things when drafting my shortlist;

Seller profile and portfolio

Image showing Fiverr WordPress developer portfolio list
Example WordPress developer on Fiverr with an impressive portfolio list

I want a WordPress developer who’s not shy of showing off their work and experience. Usually, this means it’s a portfolio that’s worth showing off, but I make sure to look through and gauge for myself.

Fiverr badging

Take note of the seller’s Fiverr badge – this WordPress developer has a Fiverr Choice badge

Fiverr badges are ‘medals’ of the sort applied to freelancers who’ve demonstrated excellence over time. There are several of them (and you can read more about them here). However, I pay special focus to sellers with the Fiverr Choice badge. Why? Fiverr awards this badge dynamically to sellers who’re currently rated top performers with a high customer satisfaction quotient.

Reviews

I ignore the positive reviews (virtually every gig returned in search has a surplus of positive reviews) and instead focus on three-star and one-star reviews. Fiverr allows you to sort reviews by star ratings if you’re on desktop or by negative or positive if you’re in-app.

Three-star reviews are usually from neutral clients, so I take whatever’s said here very seriously. On the other hand, issues in one-star reviews only become significant if it’s a recurring theme among multiple buyers.

Choosing the ideal freelancer

Shortlist in hand; the next step is to contact each freelancer and run them through your questions template. I’ve already described what you need to be on the lookout for, but if you need help, here’s a template to get you started:

Hi *freelancer*

What is your tech stack? AKA, what programming languages are you good with?

Can I see samples of WordPress websites you’ve built before?

Can I see an example of a functionality you implemented on a WordPress website using JavaScript?

If you need recommendations on the best Fiverr WordPress experts, I’ve applied everything I discussed up there and drafted up a list. Skodzhamanov

No surprises here that the top person on this list is a Fiverr Pro seller who also has Fiverr Choice gig. Svet provides the comprehensive WordPress development package – if you’re looking to create a WordPress site from the ground up, this is your guy.

Strengths

  • In-depth knowledge of relevant programming languages – PHP, JavaScript
  • Design maestro – well evidenced in Portfolio catalog
  • Excellent customer service with 30 -day post-delivery support

Rating review

Over 140 five-star reviews, with the only none five-star review being a one-star review from a seller who wasn’t happy with the project’s duration – take note, not the project quality but its duration. More impressive, however, is Svet’s reply to this seller. It’s all shades of professionalism served with a touch of class.

Andriyhaydash

Andriy’s main Fiverr Gig is for developing WordPress plugins, but this is the guy you’d want to contact for everything relating to the more technical aspects of WordPress. Over five years on-the-job experience building WordPress and WordPress related web applications tell you all you need to know about this guy’s technical prowess.

Strengths

  • Expert knowledge of WordPress related programming languages and frameworks
  • On hands technical experience and expertise with creating custom, bespoke WordPress solutions

Rating review

No dirt on Andriy’s profile as at the time of writing this review – it’s all five-star reviews with superlative praise and visibly satisfied customers.

Detheme/neonwebdesign

The team at Neonwebdesign combines a keen eye for details with what I’ll describe as creative flair in their WordPress websites. And that’s to be expected – these guys have been theming WordPress websites for well over eight years.  Compared to most other freelancers on this list, they’re cheaper too, so ideally, the go-to-guys if you’re on a tight budget.

Strengths

  • Skilled designers with a flair for visually captivating WordPress websites
  • Sound knowledge of relevant programming languages
  • Budget-friendly

Rating review

It’s all five-stars on their main WordPress development gig – that’s 120 thoroughly satisfied customers and counting.

Urdeke

Urdeke offers several WordPress related services on Fiverr, all of them geared towards helping you customize or perform bug fixes. Which means this is your go-to guy for everything related to optimizing an existing WordPress site. He builds WordPress websites too, but with over six years spent fixing up botched WordPress websites, this is a dev who’s better with the tricky troubleshooting issues that might arise in a WordPress site. And oh, he’s a Fiverr Top-Rated seller.

Strengths

  • Bug fixing handyman – Urdeke has all the knowledge, tools and experience to characterize, isolate and fix issues on any WordPress site
  • Fluent in all relevant programming language
  • Great customer service
  • Very budget-friendly

Rating review

Urdeke has over 437 reviews on his main WordPress customization gig. All but two of those reviews are five-star – one’s four-star, and the other is one star. Naturally, I was drawn to the one-star review, but all the reviewer had to say was ‘no comment,’ which doesn’t let off much. Urdeke explains what was happening – take a look

Linspire

WordPress is a very vulnerable web building platform. You need to be very tight on security to prevent getting hacked, most people don’t, and that’s why Linspire makes a killing on Fiverr. This is the guy you’d run to if you ever run into issues with hackers and malware. He’s been kicking hackers’ butts for well over six years now.

Strengths

  • In-depth technical knowledge of how WordPress runs and functions
  • Barebones programmer who’s educated on current WordPress security and vulnerability issues
  • Excellent at implementing preventive security protocols

Rating review

Almost 700 reviews and just 7 are sub-five-star, with 6 being 4-star reviews and only 1 making the 3-star. I’ll let you make your judgement on that lone 3-star review.
